  • The period the rent covers
  • How the rent was paid
  • Landlord's PAN, if annual rent is above ₹1 lakh

Rent receipt FAQs

Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?

Most employers ask for rent receipts as proof before they apply the HRA exemption to your salary. Without them, the exemption usually isn't applied through payroll and you would have to claim it when filing your return, with the same proof in hand.

When is the landlord's PAN mandatory?

When the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 in a year (roughly ₹8,334 a month or more), your employer needs your landlord's PAN to allow the HRA exemption. Below that, PAN is optional.

Do rent receipts need a revenue stamp?

A receipt for a cash payment above ₹5,000 needs a ₹1 revenue stamp, signed across by the landlord. Rent paid by UPI, bank transfer or cheque leaves its own payment record, so a stamp isn't needed. The generator marks the stamp box automatically when it applies.

Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?

No. The HRA exemption is only available if you choose the old tax regime. Under the new regime you don't need rent receipts for tax purposes.

Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?

Yes, if the house is owned by your parent and they actually receive the rent and show it as income in their own tax return. Keep proper receipts and preferably pay by bank transfer so there's a record.

Monthly or quarterly receipts — which should I make?

Either is accepted by most employers. Monthly receipts are the safest default; quarterly receipts mean fewer pages for your landlord to sign. Check if your employer's HR portal asks for a specific format.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The receipts are built entirely in your browser. Nothing you type on this page is sent to Score99's servers.
